M2M means the joining of telecommunications and IT in order
to integrate equipment in company IT systems, creating added
value services.
Wireless services
are being used more and more for Machine to Machine communications.
According to the most recent studies, the market in communication
between machines and between people and machines promises
fast expansion in the next two years.
The main reasons
for this conclusion is the recent availability of efficient
wireless data transport technologies, the fast spread of microprocessors
in all kinds of machinery, and the opportunity to offer new
services and to improve existing services relating to after-sales
assistance and machine maintenance.
Wireless technology
is preferable in both mobile and fixed situations, due to
the simplicity of installation and the flexibility and standardization
at an international level.

Within business,
the sectors which can benefit most from the use of M2M solutions
are generally those dealing with design and after-sales service.
The design office, having direct links with prototype machines
and with machines installed at the clients premises,
is in a position to collect functional statistical data and
detailed information regarding the evolution of firmware execution
so as to optimise the design of new components.
Customer assistance
services are able to operate using tele-assistance for the
analysis of machine malfunctions, the downloading of firmware
updates, the identification of fault codes and the spare parts
required for repairs, as well as the suggestion to the client
of immediate work and operational configurations of machines
to improve the quality of the product and reduce machine wear,
and consequent maintenance requirements.
